Why schools value the student interview
Now more than ever Chinese students are studying abroad and for many the U.S. is their number 1 pick. An often important component of students getting accepted to a particular school; whether its high school or university is the student interview. Students who don’t take the time to prepare for the interview are sometimes unable to make a strong enough impression to get accepted into their dream school.
Schools value the student interview because it gives more insight into the student than any resume or cover letter ever could. Students are asked questions about their life experiences, challenges, successes, hobbies, favorite subjects, family life etc. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their individuality and their back story. For American schools, highlighting your individuality and what makes you unique is a very important component; high test scores and GPA are not enough to get accepted into the Ivy League universities and other top ranking schools.
Schools also value the student interview because it is putting the English language skills of potential attendees to the test in real time. How well can the student express his thoughts and ideas? Provide descriptive depth to his answers and maybe even tell a short story? These are the kinds of questions the admissions officer is always testing students on and because they have so much experiencing talking to a wide range of students they can’t be fooled or deceived.
Even if a student looks good on paper and they have high test scores and GPA, a horrible interview can be the single determining factor that prevents them getting into the school of their choosing. The admissions officer has a job to do and has no problem saying “no” to a student he deems not suitable. Students only get one shot to make a first impression, it is best for them if they make a positive one.
